Submarine Groundwater Discharge in the Northern Bohai Sea, China: Implications for Coastal Carbon Budgets and Buffering Capacity

چکیده
Abstract Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) has been widely recognized as an important source of dissolved nutrients in coastal waters and affects nutrient biogeochemistry. In contrast, little information is available on SGD impacts carbon budgets. Here, we assessed the associated (dissolved inorganic [DIC] total alkalinity [TA]) fluxes Liaodong Bay (the largest bay Bohai Sea, China) discussed their border implications for DIC budget buffering capacity. Based 223 Ra 228 mass balance models, flux was estimated to be (0.92–1.43) × 10 9 m 3 d −1 . contributor DIC, accounting 55%–77% sources. The low ratio (<1) SGD‐derived TA negative correlation between radium isotopes pH seawater implied that would potentially reduce Bay. Combining data with literature data, found off China 4–9 times greater than those from rivers. By analyzing TA/DIC ratios along Chinese coast related fluxes, thought partially CO 2 buffer capacity receiving seawater. These results obtained at scale national suggest a significant component may play critical role modulating atmospheric sequestration.

Investigation of submarine groundwater discharge
Coastal hydrogeologists and oceanographers now recognize the potentially significant contribution that submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) could make to the coastal ocean. SGD may be both volumetrically and chemically important to coastal water and chemical budgets. A worldwide compilation of observed SGD shows that groundwater seepage from the land to the ocean occurs in many environments al...
متن کاملSpatial distribution and budget for submarine groundwater discharge in Eckernförde Bay (Western Baltic Sea)
Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) from subseafloor aquifers, through muddy sediments, was studied in Eckernförde Bay (western Baltic Sea). The fluid discharge was clearly traced by 222Rn enrichment in the water column and by the chloride profiles in pore water. At several sites, a considerable decrease in chloride, to levels less than 10% of bottom-water concentrations, was observed within ...

متن کاملNitrogen biogeochemistry of submarine groundwater discharge
To investigate the role of the seepage zone in transport, chemical speciation, and attenuation of nitrogen loads carried by submarine groundwater discharge, we collected nearshore groundwater samples (n 5 328) and examined the distribution and isotopic signature (d15N) of nitrate and ammonium. In addition, we estimated nutrient fluxes from terrestrial and marine groundwater sources. We discuss ...
